Rose tea is supposedly good to calm the nerves and for de-stressing. A good cuppa to have to help the body relax.

Pre Chinese New Year

I will be celebrating Chinese New Year at home this year. Its been a while since I'm home for this festive season.

We went to buy gifts or 'ko nin fo' for my parents today (8 January) - a tradition that we have been following. This year's gift consist of chinese sausages (lap cheong), pistachios, wintermelon seeds (kua chi), mushrooms, red dates (hong jo), abalones and wax duck (lap ngap).

I like to buy my 'ko nin fo' a bit earlier to avoid the crowd at the shops. My sis recommended a shop in Centrepoint so we went to have a look today. There, my 'ko nin fo' shopping is done!

I did a little shopping for myself too. I never specifically buy new clothes/shoes for Chinese New Year, but since I'll be spending the occasion at home, I want something new *grin*.

So, here's my new pair of shoes and bag from Vincci. I bought a couple of tops too!
Tonight (17 January), it was time to prepare the red packets or 'ang pows' for family, relatives and friends. This has been my responsibility since I got married.

I used to be at the receiving end, making sure that I have a big enough bag to keep them all. Now that I'm all grown up, I'm now the giver and I still need to have a big enough bag to keep them all!!!

Life is a cycle.

On the eve of Chinese New Year (22 January), beloved hang up the red cloth on our main door. His mum bought us two pots of lime plants as well.

We're all set for the Chinese New Year!!! Gong Xi Fa Chai, and happy holidays all.

Another year passed

In a couple of days, we'll be saying goodbye to 2011. How quickly time flies aye. The year has passed by in a glimpse for me. Christmas flew by, New Year just around the corner, and Chinese New Year less than a month away. Phew!

Over a cuppa tonight, I have to write a 'closing' entry for 2011 and a 'welcoming' entry for 2012. It's going to be a rather brief one.

2011 treated me quite well. The only setback I guess was not having much time for personal travels. Morocco didn't happen again (totally my fault for not making it happen).

I'm glad though that I visited the historical city of Sukhothai, Thailand - a place which I've been wanting to visit for some time. Also glad that we took beloved's parents on a cruise holiday to Phuket and Krabi.

Work wise, schedule has been tight but still very much a joy. It was sad to see a colleague turned friend leave after working together for eight years. 2012 will mark my ninth year in this job. Gosh, time really flies!

All in all, I'm ready to say goodbye to 2011.

What's in 2012? Apart from more travels (hopefully!), I hope to keep up last year's resolution of spending less, saving more. Looking also to making new investments.

There could be a possibility of moving home too.

In the office, we're expecting a new team member to join us in the new year, so I look forward to building a new working relationship.

My wish for 2012? Good health and happiness for my loved ones. May 2012 be smooth sailing. May we all face any challenges and difficulties that come our way with a brave heart and a positive mind.

To all my avid followers, thank you for your continuous support and interest to this blog. I have enjoyed every moment of writing it, and I certainly do hope that you have enjoyed reading them.

Winter Solstice Festival

The Winter Solstice Festival is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese.

Today, sunshine is supposed to be at its weakest, and daylight the shortest. True enough, it was cloudy, gloomy and rainy all day today!

In Chinese, the Winter Solstice Festival is known as 'Ko Tong'. It simply means the end of a year, and the start of a new one.

Traditionally, family members get together for a meal and after that have 'tong yuen' or glutinous rice balls. Everyone is a year older after having a 'tong yuen'. Ha!

Our family has been following this tradition for as long as I can remember - have dinner and 'tong yuen'. This year we ate out because I was too busy to cook, actually, lazy to cook.

Mum usually buys the 'tong yuen' frozen from the supermarket, but this year my sis made them from scratch.

I spent a relaxing and lazy weekend in Langkawi. Thank you MZ for inviting me to your hometown and welcoming me to your parents' home - Sari Village Homes.

I missed climbing up and down the stairs, and cooking in your mum's kitchen. Ha! And also driving the Nissan Terano up and down the hill!

We had so much time, yet didn't get to use the lovely swimming pool. Aiks!

Besides spending lots of time at Sari Village Homes, we went to Helang Square. We managed to get cheap tickets for the cable car ride too from one of the tour operators at Jetty Point.

When the rain stopped, we took the kids out to the beach for a game of frisbee. Guess who had to run around catching it?

New Sukhothai, Thailand

When I was doing my research on Sukhothai, I had the impression that it was a much bigger and busier city.

Opps, Sukhothai turned out to be a very laid back and quiet small-ish town. Visitors usually stay for a day or two to visit the historical parks, before moving on to Lampang and Chiang Mai in the north.

We stayed at the Sukhothai Treasure & Spa Resort, which was absolutely lovely. Good service, friendly staff, good food, comfy room!

Like all Thai cities/towns, there will be at least one night market somewhere in town. This one is by the River Yom.

Nothing much on offer - a small night market where locals buy their daily groceries.

We spotted this gigantic gold Buddha just outside Sukhothai in a village called Nong Wong when we were heading for Si Satchanalai.

Quite impressive to find this in a small village!

Sukhothai has a lovely airport too, which services two flights a day to Bangkok, and one flight to Lampang.

Si Satchanalai Historical Park, Thailand

Affectionately known as the twin city of Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai Historical Park is located in Si Satchanalai district, approximately 70km from Sukhothai.

We were urged by the locals to pay a visit to the park, so off we went in our bike! I don't have any favourites here, but two of the Buddhist monasteries are worth spending time looking.

Wat Chang Lom
This is a Buddhist monastery located in the heart of Si Satchanalai. Built in the 14th century, this structure has architecture influence from Sri Lanka.

The main stupa is round-shaped, with a high square base. The base of the structure is surrounded by 39 elephant sculptures.

Wat Ched Thaeo
Another important Buddhist monastery of Sri Satchanalai. Writings suggest that this might be the royal graveyard of the Sukhothai dynasty.

Stupas in this temple were built in various styles - round, lotus and square.

Compared to Sukhothai Historical Park, this site isn't as well restored, many temples are already damaged beyond recognition.

Temples are also very scattered and far apart. The whole area looks like an unkept jungle - felt errie after a while!

Just before dawn, it was time to get out of the park and head back to Sukhothai.

Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand

At long last, I managed to visit Sukhothai, a historical city in the north of Thailand. My purpose was to see the ruins of Sukhothai left behind by the Sukhothai kingdom of the 13th and 14th centuries.

The 193 ruins are within a perimeter-ed city wall about 2km east west by 1.6km north south, now called the Sukhothai Historical Park. Of course, we didn't have the time explore every one.

These are my favourite!

Wat Si Chum

Just outside the city wall at the north west corner is Wat Si Chum, famous for a large sitting Buddha. This is my first favourite! Glad we didn't miss this hidden temple.

Wat Si Sawai

My second favourite temple is Wat Si Sawai. I loved the three prangs of the temple built in Lop Buri style.

Wat Si Sawai isn't the biggest or most important temple for the kingdom, but to me it has the most intricate decoration and architecture.

Wat Mahathat

Of course, Wat Mahathat has to be one of my favourites too. This temple sits in the heart of the park and is the largest and most important temple of the kingdom.

Wat Mahathat consists of multiple assembly halls, shrines, Buddha images and over 200 chedis and stupas! Most of them have been restored and in somewhat good condition.

We spent the most time here.

By now we've seen quite a bit of chedis, stupas, Buddha images and temples. Can be an overkill at times. Anyway, these are all spectacular structures.

Like all ancient civilization, I can only imagine how majestic the Sukhothai kingdom was centuries ago.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Outside Bangkok

The Damnoen Saduak Floating market is located about 100km southwest of Bangkok. Though there are many floating markets in Thailand, this is the most popular among tourists.

Beloved and I spent a Sunday there. Had to get out of Bangkok at least for a day! A day trip cost about RM70 per person. Best to arrive early in the morning when the market is busy.

For a small fee, you can hop on one of the paddle boats for a 30-minute ride along the canal. Along the way, shop for souvenirs and sample local snacks and fruits!

You can also walk along the elevated platform along the canal and do your shopping.

Oh, remember to bargain!

Sungai Yu, Klang

A group of us went for a big seafood lunch at Bukit Tinggi, Klang last Saturday. The name of the restaurant is Sungai Yu.

We ordered:
1. Sweet & sour crabs with fried mantau
2. Coconut prawns
3. Deep-fried seafood beancurd
4. Kong pou mantis prawns (the group called this praying mantis!)
5. Yam basket
6. Baby french beans with belacan
7. Fried meehoon with clams

All for RM145. Cheap!

Morganfield's, Pavillion KL

Beloved and I went to try out a relatively new restaurant called Morganfield's at Pavillion, KL. They specialized in pork ribs, so pork ribs it is!

First, put on a bib that says 'Money can't buy me love, but it can buy me pork ribs'.

Then, dig in when your half slab of ribs is served. Not the best ribs I've tasted, but its alright.

If you're in town and have an appetite for porky, you may want to consider Morganfield's.

Superstar Libra

It feels really good to be on solid ground after swaying, rocking and floating on water for four days. Ha!

Beloved took us on a cruise to Phuket and Krabi, onboard the Superstar Libra. It was indeed an experience for my in-laws who have not been on a cruise before. For me, I'll rather be on a plane, train, helicopter, bus, car than on a boat.

Nonetheless, we had a great time!

Beloved's parents are into lottery, so that was about the first thing they did after settling down. Guess what? They won RM20! Ha!

We left Swettenham Pier for Phuket, Thailand just after sunset. The Captain greeted us at the pool deck, followed by entertainment by the Blush Show Band.

We went to explore the ship - all ten floors to see what's there before going back to the pool deck for a big BBQ dinner!

We arrived Phuket early the next day. We booked ourselves onto a shore excursion the night before, so we got to go on land for the day.

First stop on the excursion was Promthep Cape, the southern-most tip of Phuket. Great view of the Andaman Sea here.

Next, we visited Wat Chalong, Phuket's most important Buddhist temple. Cannot resist a cool coconut drink on a hot day. I paid RM4 for it!

Just before lunch we stopped briefly at the Sri Burapa Cashew Nut Factory to sample an assortment of cashew nuts, dried fruits, candies and local snacks.

The highlight of this excursion was the Simon Cabaret Show. The performers are all men turned women. They looked pretty amazing!

By the time we arrived back at the ship, it was almost midnight. Time to set sail for Krabi!

We arrived Krabi on time the next morning. The skies were a little grey and it started drizzling. Aiks! The ship anchored in Krabi deep sea, and smaller boats ferried us to shore.

From there, we took a short tuk-tuk ride to Ao Nang Beach. We walked along Ao Nang beach, did some shopping, and had lunch at a local Thai restaurant.

Before long, it was time to head back to the ship. There, our 4D3N cruise on the Superstar Libra to Penang-Phuket-Krabi-Penang!

Macau: Penha Hill & Guia Hill

Our trip is fast coming to an end. On the last day, we covered Penha Hill and Guia Hill before heading to the aiport in Taipa.

We started the day with a hearty breakfast at a local coffee shop!

Penha Hill
Towering above colonial villas is Penha Hill. Here you can get an excellent view of the central area of Macau, and when skies are clear, China.

Apart from the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha, there's nothing much here. The garden was infested by dragonflies!

So, after soaking in the morning sun and enjoying the cool breeze, we started our descend down Penha Hill.

It was a long long walk to A-Ma Temple! We made it there after 30 minutes. Phew!

Also known as 'Ma Kok Miu' in Chinese, the temple is dedicated to the goddess A-Ma or better known as Tin Hau.

This is an extremely old temple in Macau - the original one was already standing when the Portugese first arrived.

Done with the temple, we headed back to town for lunch first before continuing to Guia Hill. I had noodles with braised chicken. RM12, not bad right?

The foodcourt at New Yaohan was pretty good. Wide selection of food at reasonable prices.

Guia Hill

Guia Hill is the highest point on the peninsula, so again views are amazing! Nothing much here as well except for the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia which stood next to the 15m-tall Guia lighthouse. Apparently, this is the oldest lighthouse on the China Coast!

It was way too hot to be outside taking photos! So after a couple of snaps, off we go. We overheard someone saying there's a cable car service down the hill, so we went looking for it.

Turned out, the ride lasted less than a minute. Ha!

It was about time to head to the airport to catch our flight home. Has been an exciting three days discovering Macau.

Macau: Taipa & Coloane

A trip to Macau wouldn't be complete without visiting the islands of Taipa and Coloane. So after a big dim sum brunch at the hotel, we set off to this territory.

The causeway connecting the two islands has been widened by landfill to such an extent that Taipa and Coloane are now almost one island (I can't tell them apart, to be honest).

This area is known as the Cotai Stripe and is home to a few big casino-hotel-resorts. We visited City of Dreams, Hard Rock, Venetian-Macao and Galaxy.

Loved Venetian best, especially the Grand Canal area.

We stopped for tea at one of the cafes in the Grand Canal before moving to Hard Rock Hotel. Managed to do some shoopping too!

Coloane

We took a local bus to A-Ma Statue and Temple after that. We only had time to visit the temple and not the statue!

This was the only place we got to see in Coloane. Two Macanese ladies advised against going deeper into Coloane due to time and difficulty in getting transport back.

We left for Taipa after performing some prayers and donations. Spent the evening at Rua da Cunha or popularly known as Food Street.

We combed the narrow streets around Rua da Cunha. First stop, a shop selling fishballs and sugarcane juice. Snack time!

Taipa is rapidly becoming urbanised. You can see a large high-rise housing development in the centre of the island now, and this on-going construction project is called Taipa City.

However, with a parade of baroque churches and buildings, Taoist and Buddhist temples, it is still easy to experience the traditional charms of the island.

After a hearty seafood dinner, we head back to the peninsula.

Macau Tower

Feeling energetic after dinner, we ddecided to visit Macau Tower. At alomst 339m, it is the 8th tallest structure in the world. Really?

Entrance fee to the observation deck was way too much to pay, so we skipped the idea of going up to have a nightcap.

Walking back to the hotel, the night view of Macau greeted us. Simply stunning, ain't it?

Macau: San Ma Lo, St Paul's Ruins & Outer Harbour

The buddies and I spent a wonderful weekend in Macau. If you think there's only casinos here, think again. This small piece of land has much more to offer.

Following the walking tours recommended by the Macau Government Tourist Office, we managed to cover most parts of the peninsula and islands in three days.

San Ma Lo, St Paul's Ruins and Outer Harbour
Upon arrival, we went to look for Margaret's Cafe which is well known for its Portugese egg tarts.

This tiny cafe is located just two roads away from our hotel, but we only managed to find it after asking for directions twice.

The egg tarts were yummy. Sad to say though, staff were rude and service poor. As delicious were the tarts, we won't be going back for seconds.

We head towards Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, aka San Ma Lo (New Street). This is a typical Macanese street with shophouses still maintaining their ochre facades, stucco ornamentation and deep wrought-iron balconies.

After getting our bearings, we moved on and arrived at the Cathedral Square. The bright yellow and green buildings caught our eyes.

Businesses are buzzing along San Ma Lo. There are strings of shops selling dried seafood, traditional medicine, jewellery, cakes and biscuits, clothes etc.

Not too far away is Largo do Senado or 'Senate Square', also buzzing with activities.

The square is filled with shops and cafes but it is the wavy black-and-white cobbles pathways and colourful colonial buildings that made the square attractive and breathtakingly beautiful.
Facing the square to the west is Leal Senado, Macau's most important historical building. It used to be the Loyal Senate, but today houses the Provisional Municipal Assembly of Macau.

Walk through the wrought-iron gates and you'll find a well-kept garden and water fountain.

North-east of Largo do Senado is the imposing Church of St Dominic. This bright yellow baroque-style building sort of dominates the square. There was service going on, so I only managed a peek inside.

We stopped for a late lunch before finding our way to St Paul's Ruins. We shared a Macanese pork bun, egg and luncheon meat sandwich and a bowl of noodles with fried fish crackers.

Tummy filled, we head to St Paul's Ruins - a must visit place if you're in Macau. Many consider the ruins of the Church of St Paul to be the greatest monument to Christianity in Asia.

The facade has been fully restored, so you can admire the wonderful statues, portals and engravings.

It was such a humid day, so we decided to do a pit stop at Haagen Daaz for ice-cream before continuing our walking tour to the Outer Harbour area.

The Outer Harbour area is also known as NAPE (new reclaimed land of the outer harbour). Apart from the MGM and Wynn casinos and hotel-resorts, NAPE is primarily an area of warehouses, bars and restaurants.

We came here to have our dinner and to see the 20m-high bronze monument of the Goddess of Mercy or Kun Iam.

The statue sits on an artificial island in the harbour and is connected to the mainland by a 60m-long causeway.

Its been a long day. Tomorrow we'll be going off to the islands of Macau.

I finally got myself a new camera. In sexy red! I remained loyal to Canon, and chose the IXUS 220 HS.

There's quite a bit of additional features in this model. So time to browse through the user's manual (something that I don't like doing very much).

One of my most expensive fast food meal ever, I think. Two meal sets costed slightly over RM40!!!

But I have to say it was very satisfying biting into a burger as big as my face, and munching on thickly cut fries. Drinks was bottomless too.

But hey, a set meal is way too much for an average eater like me. And I would think twice before spending RM20 on fast food.

It was my first visit to Carl's Jr. I would definitely go again when I'm feeling a bit rich and wanting to stuff myself silly with a huge hamburger!

Presentation

This was an appetizer served at The Han Room, Gardens Mid Valley. It consisted of crab meat, pomelo and oranges plus some sort of Thai-style dressing.

I've tasted better salads, but I have to say the presentation was very attractive. It was the look of it that made me ordered this dish in the first place.

Chocolate Lounge

When two good friends meet, what do they do? Food and gossips are must on the list! GYS and I spent last Friday afternoon having tea at Chocolate Lounge, The Curve.

Not sure what struck us. Between us, we had pasta, sandwiches, waffles and crepes! Of course, coffee and tea too. Mind you, that was for tea!

Good thing the company and gossips were good, because the food was so-so only. Coffee was good though.

We missed WPY. Happy belated birthday, my darling friend. I bet you missed us too in Penang.

Mid-Autumn Festival celebration

The family celebrated the mooncake festival at home, with good food and good company. After dinner, mooncakes and desserts were served, lanterns lit.

A moderate affair for us, like every year. Most importantly, the family is together during this festive season.

Beloved and I spent a few days in this seafront town. It is the low season now, so things are relatively cheaper, there's less tourists and we practically had most places to ourselves. Just perfect!

Limestone hills, beaches and town of Ao Nang

We decided not to do the typical island hopping activity which most tourists would do, instead rented a motorbike to venture the roads less traveled.

Day 1

We stopped at Wat Sai Thai, a smallish cave temple with a not so exciting reclining Buddha to get our bearings. Trying to find a petrol station!

We arrived in Krabi town shortly after and was persuaded by a longtail boatman to hop onto his boat for a few hours ride along the river.

For a small fee, he took us to Khanab Nam Cave and a Fish Farm.

The fish farm features a scary looking Puffer Fish, and a 4kg mud crab.

We finished off the boat trip with a fresh coconut drink on a floating cafe.

Just as the sun is about to set, we arrived at Nopparat Thara Beach. See the little islands scattered around the sea?

Time for dinner. Seafood! We spotted a crowded seafood restaurant in Ao Nang with a spectacular view of the beach.

Day 2

After breakfast we head off in search of Gastropod Fossil which we couldn't find the previous day. Apparently fossils can still be found here and can be clearly seen at low tide. Really?

Next stop, a very famous cave temple in Krabi - Tiger Cave. You can also climb the 1,237 steps to get to the top of the mountain. You must be kidding me! Beloved made it up to the top though *salute*

We stopped in Krabi town for lunch before heading back to Ao Nang. Oh, its the durian season now so there are many stalls along the road selling the fruit. Yes, we had to stop for a durian break.

We spent the rest of the day in A0 Nang, shopping *wink* and trying out local snacks *grin*.

We stayed in a very nice hotel called the Red Ginger Chic Resort in Ao Nang. Loved the pool!

Wished we had another day. That would have been ideal!

Singapore

MZ and I were in Singapore recently, just in time to see one of the trial runs for Singapore's National Day.

We spent one evening at Clarke Quay - had dinner at a nice Indian restaurant, and after that a stroll along the river.

We spent the weekend in Penang. Guess what? Yes, we stuffed ourselves with food! Food in Penang aren't as yummy and cheap as they used to be, but hey, can't be in Penang and not eat right?

OK, besides eating we did make the effort to at least do some sightseeing. I heard about Straits Quay, so decided to check it out!

This is Penang's first seafront retail marina, developed by E&O. It is located roughly between Tanjung Bungah and Batu Ferringhi. If you know where Island Plaza it, Straits Quay is just a stone's throw away.

Very impressive looking, with a collection of restaurants, cafes, boutiques and specialty shops. This is certainly the new look of Penang.

Oh, we came to Penang to attend a wedding. Eating and sightseeing were just side activities. It was Ryan and Michelle's wedding, which was held at the E&O Hotel.

Thank you Bee Bee for including us in this very joyous occasion. We had a lovely evening! Hey, congratulations too, my dear friend!

Just back from Bandung, Indonesia. Before you think I went on another holiday.....nope, I was there purely for work.

Was introduced to a shop selling local noodles. It was good - simple and plain. Very much like our mee kolok. Bought really good homemade Indonesian layered cake too.

What else did I do? Nothing much. Indonesia doesn't have much to offer me, so its just work and work and more work. Sigh!

Next trip out - Brunei, another not so happening place. Again, work, work and work. I wonder when's my next holiday aye?

A vertical rainbow (almost perfect) appeared as I draw my living room curtains. My mood was instantly lifted. It has been raining all day, and the sky has been dark.

At that moment, the sun appeared behind the heavy clouds, the rain subsided and out came a beautiful rainbow to cheer up a wet, gloomy day. Ahhh!!!

I rushed off to find my camera hoping to take a shot before the rainbow disappears. This was taken from my balcony.

The rainbow lasted for a minute or so before being swollen by big black clouds, and it began to pour once again.

I draw my curtain close.

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the sun shines on to droplets of moisture in the earth's atmosphere.

The buddies and I had the opportunity again to have a weekend together. We choose Kemaman in Terengganu this time to fulfil our long-time wish to visit this part of the country.

WPY and her family lived in this town previously, so they know the places very well - especially where good food can be found!!!

We had our first dinner in Kuantan, in a crowded little restaurant called Alor Akar. I loved the salted egg crabs the best. It was super-duper heavenly!

After the huge seafood dinner, we went to Teluk Chempedak for a stroll. After a hot day, the cooling breeze greeted us. As a bonus, we got some free fruit juices!

The following day we decided to go to Pulau Kapas in Terengganu, so we drove all the way to Marang where the jetty is.

Before that, breakfast stops in Kemaman - first for curry noodles; second for ikan kembong noodles and fish crackers; and third fried noodles and tau foo fah. Phew!

Yup, three places for breakfast!

By the time we finally reached Marang, it was already 1pm, just in time to catch the 1.30pm ferry to Pulau Kapas.

Due to rough sea conditions, it took us longer to arrive at Pulau Kapas than usual. We also had two breakdowns along the way! Aiks!!!

We were half soaked with sea water by the time we reached the island.

After some swimming and relaxing, it was time to leave. We took the last ferry back to Marang.

You won't believe it but our ferry broke down again!!! And this time we had to be hauled back to shore by a passing fisherman! Adui!!!

By the time we reached Kuantan, we were starving (despite having three rounds of breakfast!), so we head to a restaurant in town that specialises in stuffed crabs.

Didn't quite like the batter, but the stuffing was excellent!

As if a big dinner wasn't enough, we went to have supper later on. Supper was roti bom (roti canai with butter, sugar and kaya), roti canai, nasi kukus ayam and keropok lekor. Phew!

Before we know it, the time has come to pack our bags. The time has come to head home. Before that we went to some beaches, and did some sightseeing.....and of course, more eating! Ha!

Till the next holiday with the buddies! We had a splendid time as usual.

Looking for a restaurant that serves fine Malay cuisine? Check out Bijan Bar & Restaurant. Its in a cozily decorated bungalow along Jalan Ceylon, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Its a great place to bring tourists and visitors too!

This is my second visit, though I vaguely recalled attending a friend's wedding in this restaurant many many years ago when they were in another premise.

Anyway, we started with the Aneka Pembuka Selera which consisted of kepak ayam goreng (fried chicken wings), tauhu sumbat (stuffed beancurd), popiah goreng (fried spring rolls) and cucur udang (prawn fritters).

Our mains were rendang daging (beef rendang), masak lemak ayam dengan nangka (chicken in coconut milk and young jackfruit), pucuk paku goreng tahi minyak (fern vegetables).

We ordered various rice dishes to go with the mains - nasi minyak (fragrant rice), nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk) and nasi kerabu (rice with herbs).

Too stuffed for any desserts!

Gold Coast, Queensland

Our bus dropped us off at Surfers Paradise. We are here in Gold Coast where the sun, sea and sand are! Hooray!!!

The Vibe Hotel was easy enough to find. A great place to stay. A breathtaking view of the Nerang River and the Main Beach from our balcony. Tada!

Couldn't wait any longer we went to look around. The hotel had a very nice swimming pool facing the river. This is where I'm going to spend some of my time - perhaps doing nothing, just enjoying the view. Ha!

Enough of the river, we head into the centre of Surfers Paradise where all the hype is. Here, there's plenty of bars, pubs, cafes, ice-cream parlours and restaurants to choose from. Plenty of shops for shopping too!

I am beginning to love this place. So we wonder around, combing the streets and checking out the shops.

We had lunch one day a local pub at the Clock Hotel. Most eateries are self-service. Order and pay at the cashier then wait for your food to be ready. They give you a beeper. When the beeper beeps and vibrates your food is ready and you can collect it at the kitchen. Cool?

Of course, you can sit at any table you fancy.

Same concept at Vapiano too, where we had dinner one evening. I love this place. They cook your order in front of you. I can get used to this very easily *wink*

Main Beach is just a stone's throw away. High-rise buildings dominated the coastline. Yet, the sand is fine, the water clean. Beautiful!

I wonder how much one of these unit will cost. Heard they are mostly owned by Japanese.

During the day, the beaches are packed with tourists and locals. Though the sun is shining, it can get quite chilly, hence me wearing a jacket.

Every Saturday night, there is a night bazaar at the Esplanade. Stalls are set-up just before sunset, and stay open till late. A really nice place to go for a walk after dinner. A good place to shop if you're looking for gifts.

You know what? We didn't venture out of Surfers Paradise at all! So on our last day, we decided to do an evening tour on the Aquaduck.

Its a land and cruise adventure that takes you to the magnificent Versace and Marina Mirage Resorts and a cruise on the Broadwater. The night scene was amazing. Unfortunately, my photos turned out blurry (time to get a camera that works at night!).

With that, our Australia trip came to an end. Its Air Asia back to KL in the morning *sob*

Brisbane and Sunshine Coast, Queensland

We flew Virgin Blue from Perth to Brisbane, the other side of Australia. Brisbane is the capital state of Queensland.

Sudden thunderstorm greeted us upon arrival. Aiks! So, it was an early dinner at Dome's and call it a day.

The rain cleared and we had clear blue skies the next day. Yay! It was time to explore Brisbane city, so off we went!

Our hotel was on Spring Hill, across the road from the Roma Street Parklands. It is very close to the city centre too and other precincts. It is the end of autumn now but flowers and plants are still in full bloom.

The Old Windmill known locally as the Observatory is just down the road from our hotel. It was built by convicts in 1829 to grind corn for the early settlement.

Later years, the building became a signal station, and today it is empty and securely locked up.

We had breakfast at a nearby cafe one morning. A worker's breakfast which consisted of bacon, eggs, sausages, hash browns, toasts and a glass of OJ. Yums!

Not too far away is St John's Cathedral. After a pit stop for a few photos, we moved on.

Next stop is the former Treasury with its classical facade. The building is now home to Brisbane Casino and Hotel.

Every Wednesday there is a Farmers Market at the square in front of the casino. Fresh local produce grown by the sellers themselves.

There's local fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers, sausages just to name a few. I sampled some pure, fine black sugarcane juice.

We walked through Fortitude Valley towards New Farm to get to Wilson Outlook to have a good view of Story Bridge and the cliffs of Kangaroo Point.

One night we went to Emporium at Fortitude Valley for dinner and desserts. Nice restaurants in a nice environment.

Very much like our Mont Kiara/Sri Hartamas. Yah, I had churros again *slurp*.

We decided it was time to see Brisbane from the river, so we took a bus to Tenerife ferry terminal to catch the cross river ferry to Bulimba jetty.

There are quite a few bridges in the city too, and going on the ferry is a good way to see them all. That's the Story Bridge again.

It was a relaxing river cruise downstream right till the last stop at University of Queensland, and then upstream again to stop at South Bank jetty for lunch.

There's an impressive range of eateries within the South Bank Parklands but we thought it would be more exciting to have a picnic by the river with a view of the city.

Wraps, pizzas and ice-cream - perfect! Beware of birds which are always ready to steal your food. Inside the park is also the Wheel of Brisbane.

After lunch, we walked across Victoria Bridge, back to the city. Its time to head down to the Gold Coast. We took the express train to Nerang, and a connecting bus to Surfers Paradise.

Day trip to the Sunshine Hinterland & Montville
We decided to venture out of the city, and was recommended by the tourist information centre to visit the Sunshine Coast. Turned out to be an excellent idea!

We had a pit stop half way to look at this rock formation. This is Mt Tibrogargan standing at 925 feet above sea level. Mt Tibrogargan is part of the Glass House Mountains. Mum said it look like an ape, does it?

After dropping some people off at the Australia Zoo, we head up to Ettamogah Pub - a cartoon pub that was featured in the now defunct Australasian Post magazine.

A funky pub filled with drawings by cartoonist Ken Maynard. I loved the doors to the toilets. Very Australian!

Just outside the pub is a bakery that serves delicious pies. We tried the vegetarian pie and also a gigantic size Lamington.

Next stop, the Ginger Factory. Did you know Australia supplies 70% of the world's ginger? And a lot of it comes from Queensland.

Here, you can find everything with ginger added - coffee, tea, ice cream, scones, cakes, sweets, sauces, jams and a whole lot of other things.

We had the opportunity to ride on the 1901 original Moreton train to see the ginger estate.

We then drove through quite a number of towns and villages to get to Montville. Not in order, they include Nambour, Flaxton, Mapleton, Mooloolah, Landsborough, Beerwah and Maleny. I'm sure I have missed some places.

Montville gave me a very European 'feel'. There's so many quaint cafes, tea houses, candy shops and handy craft shops along the road. So tempted to just buy everything!

The Edge Restaurant serves good lunch and tea. Not only that, their veranda gives a good and uninterrupted view of the Sunshine Coast. Ahhh!

On the way back to Brisbane we stopped McCarthy's Lookout. This is an excellent spot to have a bird's eye view of the Glass House Mountains which consist of Mt Coochin, Mt Ngungum, Mt Tibrogragan, Mt Coonowrin, Mt Beerwah and Mt Tunbubudla.

A day well spent. It was time to head back into Brisbane.

Perth, Western Australia

Perth has changed quite significantly over the last 13 years. Yet, some things still felt rather familiar. I was a student at Curtin a decade ago (my, that's a long time), so it was good to be back, though just for a short time.

The beautiful Swan Bells on Riverside Drive is new. Overlooking the picturesque Swan River, it is one of Perth's most unique and must see tourist attractions. Filled with fascinating historic content and boasting a unique and distinctive design, it has become an icon for Perth and Western Australia.

Walking up from the Swan Bells, we spotted a few kangaroo statues in front of the taxation building. That's also new, I think. Don't remember them standing there before!

Kings Park and Botanic Gardens didn't change much though. You can still get a beautiful view of the city from the top, and have a great picnic under shady huts.

The war memorial is still standing strong and bold, with a torch burning all day long. Summer flowers are still in full bloom. What a wonderful day!

We stayed next to the Town Hall, and there's a McDonald's outlet around the corner. Ha! We had McD's for breakfast, lunch and tea. Welcome to Australia!

Day trip to Wave Rock, Hyden

Mum wanted to go to the Wave Rock, so Wave Rock it is! We travelled through the Darling Ranges and stopped at York for morning tea - the first township founded in the Avon Valley.

Guess what? There's hardly anyone to be seen! I went to have a look at the York Church.

We stopped at Hippos Yawn. It consists of an unusually shaped granite that was formerly part of the larger outcrop. It certainly looked like a hippo with its mouth wide open.

We were swamped by flies. Help! Where did they come from? Its supposed to be winter!

We finally arrived at the Wave Rock after driving for almost 4 hours. Phew! Its a long way from Perth. That's Ivy, showing us the route we took.

We needed lunch first. Yups, our big picnic lunch before we climb that rock!

A granite cliff, Wave Rock is 15 metres high and 110 metres long. Its rounded like shape has been caused by weathering and water erosion which has undercut the base and left a rounded overhang.

Water from the springs running down the rock during wetter months dissolve minerals adding to the colouring of the wave.

The surface is very slippery and impossible to climb. In 1960, crystals from the rock were dated as being 2700 million years old!

There are designated steps to get to the top of the rock. Its a short climb, but a steep one. We managed! Yay!

Near Wave Rock is Mulka's Cave. The name Mulka comes from an Aboriginal legend. Mulka was the illegal son of a woman who fell in love with a man whom marriage was forbidden.

Mulka was born with crossed eyes. Even though he was a strong man, his crossed eyes prevented him from aiming a spear accurately when hunting for food.

Out of frustration and hunger, he turned to catching and eating children. Mulka's mother found out about his habits and scolded him. Losing control, he killed his mother too.

The outraged aboriginal people tracked him down and speared him. Because he did not deserve a proper ritual burial, they left his body to the ants.

Imprints of Mulka's hands can still be seen inside the cave. Not sure how much of the story is true, its a legend after all.

On the way back to Perth, we stopped at Corrigin to visit the Dog Cemetery - a tribute to Australian working sheep dogs. They are men's best friends, aye!

And a pit stop at Babakin for afternoon tea before heading back to Perth. The lady bakes really good Lamingtons.

That concluded our day trip out to the Wave Rock. We covered over 700km that day!

A morning in Subiaco
We spent one Sunday in Subiaco instead of going to Fremantle. It turned out to be a good decision as there was a union parade in Fremantle that day.

The Subiaco market was closed (we later found out that it was relocated!), but I stumbled into a pretty good coffee place which served excellent cakes and churros, my favourite!

Caversham Wildlife Park, Swan Valley

Ivy wanted to see kangaroos so I suggested we go to Caversham Wildlife Park one morning. The park is located about 16km from the city.

I remembered coming to this park when I first came to Perth as a student. They took us here as part of our orientation programme. Ha!

They kangaroos are extremely tame, guess they are used to having visitors around. So, you can pat and hand feed them as much as you like. At most, they will give you a friendly lick!

I spotted white kangaroos too. Didn't know they come in whites *wink*

What else did we do in Perth? Did I mention eating *wink*? Didn't get a chance to eat at Red Rooster and Hungry Jacks - both my favourites.

Oh, we did daily visits to supermarkets! There's just so many things to buy *grin*. Can't get enough of Coles and Woolsworth! What was the other two? K-Mart and Target!!!

The office hosted the Vice-Chancellor's and his senior team's visit to Kuala Lumpur a few weeks ago. If you don't know, the Vice-Chancellor is like a CEO of a company.

My first attempt at making a peach crumble today, and it turned out excellent. I can't share the crumble, but I sure can share the recipe. Ha!

So, here it is with pictures. A simple 10-step recipe.

200g (2 cups) plain flour

100g (1 cup) sugar

Pinch of salt (optional)

150g (3/4 bar) butter

* I reduced sugar to half the amount as I didn't want my crumble too sweet

Chinese New Year (CNY) has been particularly busy for me this year, and one of the best for many many years. That's because I normally am away, and have no time to celebrate with family and friends at home.

This year, I cooked the reunion dinner. Beloved and I spent the eve with my parents and sister. These were some of the ingredients used and the dishes I made.

It was a simple three-course dinner - steamed chicken, braised seafood pot and stir-fried mixed vegetables. Easy to make yet delicious - a perfect reunion dinner for us!

Oh, I forgot beloved 'tapau' the jellyfish yee sang from Tai Thong, and we topped it up with sliced abalone *giggle*. What a starter!

I went over to WPY's home for CNY Day 1 dinner. Steamboat! What a big meal. Stuffed ourselves silly with loads of fishballs, beancurds, vegetables, mushrooms (actually I can't remember what else I ate!).

And, I realised this is the first time I had CNY dinner with these buddies. We've been close friends for more than 20 years but have never had a CNY meal together! I honestly cannot believe it. Gosh!

I am so lucky to have them as friends. Such fantastic people!

Right, you might be asking where's my birthday cake. Didn't blow out candles on the actual day *grin*. My sis made me her chocolate cake on CNY eve, and I stuffed myself with a slice after the reunion dinner (sorry, no photos - too busy eating).

My handsome little godson waited to celebrate his birthday with me. Such a sweetie! We both shared a cake, and had a little cake-blowing ritual after the big big steamboat dinner.

After several attempts of taking nice photos, here are some of the better looking ones. Ha! No matter how you look, you are still my greatest friends.

If you think this is the end of big meals, you're wrong. On CNY Day 2, I made a hearthy lunch for a colleague and her family.

It was garlic corn pasta, butter oats prawns and my favourite mixed vegetables for lunch. We had my sis' chocolate cake and Bud's ice-cream for dessert. Gosh, I wonder where I stored all these food I've eaten!

CNY Day 2 dinner was at Dragon-i Restaurant, Sunway Pyramid with my family and beloved's. Ya, another round of big dinner. We tried their 'pun choy' - literally translated as dishes in a pot.

There were 16 ingredients in this big claypot - prawns, fish, chicken, abalone, mushrooms, vegetables, oysters, scallops, beancurds.....I can't remember the rest.

*burp* I've eaten too much. But how can you resist? Festivals is all about eating eating and eating. Oh well!

Now, I need to go and pack my bag for Sunday. Its time to go away for work. Before that, tomorrow is a day out with friends. So, check out my next entry. I'm sure I'll have something to write for CNY Day 3.

Had a great steamboat lunch with my colleagues. It is the first time we're making such an elaborate meal in the office - and tada! it turned out to be excellent. Yums!!!

I had my first taste of 'yee sang' last weekend at Din Tai Fung, Gardens. I found out this CNY dish is called Spring Toss in English.

Din Tai Fung's speciality is the 'xiao long pau' or steamed dumplings. Not my favourite dish, but the ones here are quite nice.

They also have outlets in Pavillion and Subang Empire.

Its been a week of Japanese food. Haaaaallelujah!!! Last Friday, it was buffet at Maui (Damansara Perdana), then Saturday Kampachi (Pavillion) and today Kamimura (The Weld). Wahahahaha!!!

It occured to me today when I was at the bank that Chinese New Year is barely three weeks away.

I haven't had the chance to wish people Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and soon it will be Gong Xi Gong Xi!!! So Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year and an advance Gong Hei Fatt Choy folks.

I am absolutely ready to say goodbye to 2010, and looking forward very much to welcoming the Year of the Rabbit.

2010 has been eventful.

Work has been hectic as usual, particularly during the first half of the year. But has been rewarding, so no complains there. A bit less travelling due to budget cuts, that means more time at home *thumbs up*.

Did a couple of solo travelling, and made new friends along the way. I step foot into India and Scandinavia for the first time *bliss*. Over Christmas and New Year, beloved and I spend a cold and white winter in Haerbin, China.

There has been a number of crisis and unfortunate incidents at home. A few family members needed medical attention as well. I believe sad times will past and good ones are on the way.

Apart from that, I'm well and doing good. I was fortunate to have met a few good people along the way, and also unfortunate to have lost some. That's life ay. Friends come and go, but true ones will stand by you through good and difficult times.

A peaceful and calmer 2011.

My horoscope predicts that I'll have the opportunity to meet new people through work, so am looking forward to that. Expecting another busy year in the office with a few significant events taking place.

Fingers crossed, there will be more travels. I've been thinking Morocco for a while now, we'll see if it happens this year. I'm about to miss a trip to Florida, USA so am brooding about it now *sigh*.

This year, a few friends will be getting married, so am looking forward to their weddings. A few others are expecting babies, so looking forward to baby showers and full moons too.

My resolution for the new year, as always is to save up, and spend less. For as long as I can remember its never been fulfilled, but in 2011 it will definitely happen.

I'm now looking into my investment/insurance plans and diversifying/upgrading them - hopefully to generate more wealth. I will put aside a bit more of my earnings as savings, which means I will have to cut down on unnecessary expenses. I am determined.

My dear friends and readers, thank you for supporting this blog. As always, I hope you have enjoyed reading my entries as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

I wish you a happy 2011. May the year ahead bring you great joy and happiness, much wealth, and good health. May all your dreams and wishes come true!

We celebrated mum's birthday at the Pork Place, Puchong. We ordered almost everything on the menu! Except for the giant sausages, we wiped all plates clean. Yummy!

I still like their bacon carbonara best *slurp*.

Heilongjiang's cuisines

I think there is a need for a separate entry to highlight Heilongjiang's cuisines. Not my type of food, but hey these are what the locals love. So, we have to give it a try. At least once.

Traditional dumplings with assorted meat and vegetables fillings. We had about a dozens of them for lunch.

Haerbin, China

We arrived in a very very very cold and very very very white Haerbin, capital city of Heilongjiang province, China on Boxing Day.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year peeps! Brrr.....brrr.....brrr.....

This northern most province in China is known for its subarctic climate. Average temperature during the day is -10C, and can drop down to -30C after the sun sets. What do you expect if this place is so close to Siberia?

However, with proper heavy duty winter wears, it is bearable. Come to think of it, -30C isn't that cold after all *wink*. We were well prepared.

Traffic in Haerbin is crazy. There's traffic congestion every direction you turn. That's because weather conditions doesn't permit vehicles to travel more than 40km/hour. To make it worse, there's traffic lights everywhere too.

Once in the city centre, we saw groups of skilled ice sculpturers busy at work - putting in the final touches into the ice cravings, and getting ready for the annual ice lantern festival.

Everything is made out of ice blocks - from dustbins, fences, lamp posts to benches, signages and billboards. Amazing talent they possess!

Our first stop is the restored Zhaolin Jie and Toulong Jie (Church of St Sophia) in the heart of the city centre, built by the Russians in 1907.

The interior of the church has also been restored but left in its original state as much as possible. Today it houses the Haerbin Architecture Arts Centre.

We couldn't resist buying some fresh winter nuts to try. So so yummy!!! My favourite hazel nuts. Now, where is the nutcracker?

We did a tour around the Russian Trade Centre, walking towards Stalin Park and Gogol Street - obviously to see everything Russian!

In this area, you can buy everything Russian from biscuits to weapons. I bought a bar of Russian dark chocolate to try. Think my favourite is still Cadbury!

Not too far away is the Songhua Jiang (Songhua River). The whole river is already frozen, and now turned into an outdoor arena for winter sports. I didn't realise it was a river until someone said so!

Our first feel of snow and ice. What else? Snow fight lah! Wakakakaka!!!

And glide on the very slippery ground.

And I just have to take a photo of myself hugging a snow-covered tree *lol*.

Our first glimpse of ice sculptures too. So excited. Nope, this isn't the ice lantern festival we came to see. This is just starters. Photos please!

We were told too that some people in Haerbin do winter swimming in ice holes dug around the Songhua River. I thought the Japanese are crazy, but looks like the Chinese are equally mad!

Clad in swimming attires, men and women jumped into the icy and almost frozen water. Again, again and again!!! I felt dead cold just watching them, and I'm in four layers of warm clothings.

Dongbei Hu Linyuan (Siberian Tiger Park) is located about 20km outside the city in Songbeixin district. The mission of the park is to study, breed and save the Manchurian tigers from extinction.

Minibuses take tourists around the fenced-off field to have a very close-up look at these captive cats. There are around 70 of them in the park - looking bored most of the time. They seem to be very comfortable with approaching tourists too.

The locals then recommended that we go to the Haerbin Water World to see animals performing. Why not? Turn out its an underwater world kind of place.

We managed to watch the beluga and sea lion performances - after literally fighting for seats with school kids! Wasn't really worth the effort. There were like hundreds of kids in there at one go!!!

Winter festivals in Haerbin, China

Haerbin comes alive with its winter festivals from December to February each year. We came to see the famous Ice Lantern Festival.

Held at Zhaolin Gongyuan it claimed to be the best in the world! Sorry, Sapporo, you have to be second now.

Officially, the festival is held from 5 January to 15 February but many sculptures are already ready a week earlier.

Fanciful sculptures are produced in the shapes of animals, plants, buildings or motifs taken from legends.

Some of the larger sculptures included a miniature Great Wall of China, and a scaled down Forbidden City.

These are my favourite!

The sculptures are illuminated from the inside with coloured lights, turning the whole place into a fantasy world!

Taiyangdao Gongyuan (Sun Island Park) also has its own mini-snow sculpture exhibition.

The 3800 hectares park is scattered with snow sculptures in winter. This is the place for snow fights and making snowman!

Shenyang, China

Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning province is home to over 7 million people. It used to be a Mongol trading centre as far back as the 11th century, and in the 17th century became the capital of the Manchu empire.

Our time in Shenyang was brief. We spent a bit of time in the evening at the pedestrian streets of Zhong Jie - window shopping.

Here you can find most local and international brands. And if you're hungry, street hawkers can be found everywhere.

I was particularly impressed by the spectacular lightings of the buildings. Not to mention the architecture.

Shenyang is currently in the midst of building its metro system. At the moment there's only one line running.

Time for some sightseeing. We went to General Zhang's former residence located on the south side of the Palace Museum in Shenhe area.

Zhang was an honoured figure in northeastern China, born into a powerful warlord family at the end of the Qing dynasty.

He grew to become the leader of the northeastern China government, army general, founder of Northeastern University and commander of the resistance against the Japanese. His former residence and office is now a museum.

The museum is in three sections. The old Zhang residence is built in ancient Chinese style, while the newer mansion is in ancient Roman design. There is also a house for one of his father's wives!

The buildings are captivating, but the main focus of the museum is on Zhang's life and accomplishments. Too bad, all captions of the exhibits are in Chinese *sigh*.

The place gets a little creepy after a while. Every direction you turn, there's a three meters high thick wall. Despite being a successful man, I think he also felt insecure, thus the walls for protection!

Dalian, China

Dalian (Liaoning province) surprised me. Unlike other Chinese cities I've been to, Dalian is not only extremely clean and organised, she exhibits some wonderful architecture and has refreshing acres of grass and lawns.

Today, Dalian has the largest harbour in the north-east and is also one of the most prosperous cities in China. I fell in love with Dalian immediately.

We visited Xinghai Gongyuan (XingHai Square) in the south-west corner of the city. This is an excellent place to hang-out and people-watch, especially in warmer weather.

We took our time strolling along the windy seafront, taking photos of various symbolic sculptures along the way. It was too windy to walk to the lighthouse though *sob*.

Before leaving, beloved sampled a local sausage. Tasted like luncheon meat. We then took a slow and relaxing drive along coast towards Dalian's Ocean World.

Apparently, this five-kilometres stretch is extremely popular with courting couples *wink*. Why not? The scenery is breathtaking! I sampled some local snacks - dried sweet potato chips.

We head back to the city and spent the evening at the Russian Street. Its really strange to see such buildings in China. Feels like I'm in Moscow or something.

Before dinner, we went up a tiny hill near the Central TV Tower to have a night view of the city. Too bad, the TV Tower wasn't lighted. We were told it would be beautiful.

Dinner was a spread of local delicacies - preserved vegetables (ham choy).

Changchun, China

Changchun is the capital city for Jilin province, with a population of 7 million. Bordering Russia, North Korea and Inner Mongolia, Jilin is part of the historic territory of the Manchus, founders of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).

The province was industrialised under the Japanese who seized Manchuria and shaped it into the puppet state of Manchukuo (1931-1945). Then in 1945 the Russians arrived in Changchun on a year-long looting spree. After they left, Communist followed by the Kuomintang took over.

Due to this, Changchun does not look like ordinary Chinese city, instead is a mumbo-jumbo mix of Japanese, Russians, Mongolian and Chinese influences.

The most important landmark in Changchun is the Wei Huanggong (Puppet Emperor's Palace and Exhibition Hall). This is the former residence of the last emperor of the Qing dynasty, Henry Puyi, who was installed here by the Japanese in 1932.

Yupz, Henry Puyi's story was the basis for the award-winning film The Last Emperor. Today, the dusty palace is a place of threadbare carpets and sad memories.

Puyi's study, bedroom, temple, his wife's quarters, his lover's quarters and his bathroom are now open to visitors. Unfortunately, captions of all exhibits are in Chinese *sigh*.

I loved the imperial gardens the most. Snow has covered almost all the trees and shrubs, and it looks spectacular! Snow, snow, snow!!!

After being fed too much history, it was time to have a snow fight. Yay, I won!!!

We planned to walk in the city that evening, but weather conditions didn't permit. Too cold!!! Brrrrr!!! I think it was -30C and snowing. So, we found KFC along Chongqing Commercial Street and dashed in.

That night we tried popular Changchun's dishes cooked over a hotplate. After a hearty meal, it was time to call it a day. Get into my warm bed and ready for Jilin in the morning.

Jilin, China

We spent a few days in Jilin (Jilin province) for skiing and winter activities. Reminded me of my skiing expedition in Korea years ago. Unfortunately, my skiing skills is now back to minus zero.

Surprisingly, beloved is a natural skier. He managed a few rounds down the slopes without landing on his bum. I, on the other hand, came home with aching thighs and arms, not to mention a sore bum!

Skiing is not an easy to grasp sport, you know. I spent a few hours just learning again how to control my skiis. Even getting up after falling on your bum needs skill.

We enjoyed the day, although it was extremely tiring. Believe it or not, at -20C, we were sweating and had slight sunburn. Aiks!!!

I don't know what this activity is called, but the Chinese say it snowboarding. Basically, you slide downhill (steep and long ones) using a tube. This was much much easier than skiing!

You will end up having snow splashed all over you, especially at your face when sliding downhill at high speed.

The slide down is fun, but not when you need to drag the tube uphill! Having said that we went a few rounds - just couldn't get enough of it!

Dog sledges took us to the ski resort. We were at Beidahu Huaxue Chang (Beidahu Ski Resort), 56km from Jilin. A day of skiing cost about Y500. Not too bad actually.

We also had the opportunity to visit Longtanshan Deer Farm, where they breed different species of deer. Mind you, these are huge deers.

Apparently, their horns are cut off every nine months to be used as medicine, and are extremely valuable.

Every part of the deer can be used, and not an inch goes to waste. And, beloved had the chance to sample soup boiled using the deer's penis! Ha! Ha! Ha! He said it tasted like chicken soup.

The farm also grows and breeds other plants and animals, such as the ling zhi and snow frogs. All are used in traditional chinese medicine.

In the evening, we did a pit stop at Shiji Guangchang (Century Square) south of Songhua Jiang (Songhua River). It was freezing, so after a photo or two, that was it. We couldn't take a walk either was it was way too slippery.

This LEGO-type building used to be the tallest building in Jilin, and people used to go up to the 12th floor to have a view of the city. Today, it is simply a popular hang-out spot for the locals.

We left Jilin with a heavy heart. I loved this city of 4.5 million people.

Christmas eve reunion

Had an excellent night out with my best buddies on Christmas eve. We had dinner at a fast-food Japanese restaurant (now, what's it called again??), followed by ice-cream at Baskin's.

I'm coughing, and they are happily eating scoops of icre-cream in front of me (that's what friends are for ay). Hhhmmmppphhhhhhh!!!

We exchanged gifts at midnight. Merry Christmas dudes! See you in the new year.

Winter Solstice reunion dinner

We had our winter solstice 'kuo tong' dinner at Dancing Fish, Bangsar Shopping Centre last night. Yup, Malay-Indo food for kuo tong! Ha!

I'm not a fan of Indonesian cuisine, but the dishes at Dancing Fish isn't too bad. Not sure if my taste buds are numbed due to the cough mixture I've been taking, but after a while I find all the dishes has about similar taste.

Anyway, a nice place for a pleasant dinner - though price a bit steep. Too bad I can't taste the dessert which looked yummy. Sigh!

Shangri-La & Snowflakes

GYS had something to celebrate, so what better than a good meal. I suggested we have a hearty (.....and long *wink*) buffet lunch at Lemon Garden Cafe, Shangri-La Hotel.

They didn't have my lobsters this time *sob*

I called ahead to make a reservation, and the conversation with the reservation attendant was something to note. She asked - what name, what time you coming, how many pax, your phone. OK I confirm you.

That was the exact conversation. A 5* hotel, gosh!

Then it was a good hour of massage (as expected of us), followed by window-shopping at Pavillion. To end the evening, it was desserts at Snowflakes.

We ordered (I hope I got this right) - lime jelly on shaved ice; and hot grass jelly with tapioca mochi. It was delicious but a bit too heavy. Nevertheless, we licked the bowls clean!

Good food, and excellent company - as always!!!

Christmas decors are up at all shopping malls. I was doing some shopping over the weekend, and managed to capture some scenes. I just love Christmas. Gives you that kind of magical feeling. Its barely 3 weeks away now.

Roskilde, Denmark

Our Scandinavian Europe trip is quickly coming to an end *sob*. Roskilde in Denmark is our last destination before we head home. Time fly by just too quickly *sob sob*.

I've heard of Roskilde because of their Vikings. Didn't know that it used to be the capital city of Denmark long before Copenhagen. Roskilde is also the burial place for 39 monarchs stretching back several hundred years. During the Middles Ages, it was a thriving trading port. Wow, what history!

Three huge jars at Hestetorvet Square, opposite the train station welcomed us. They represent life and death, sculptured by artist Peter Brandes.

A short walk down the road is the town's Dom Kirke. Though most of Roskilde's medieval buildings have vanished in fires over the centuries, the twin-spired cathedral managed to survive.

There is a row of bright yellow houses across from the cathedral. The contrast between them and the cathedral is simply gorgeous.

Dom Kirke has been rebuilt and added to so many times that this mighty brick edifice represents a millennium of Danish church architectural styles. See the three distinct designs? It is now protected under the Unesco's World Heritage List.

We managed to find Maglekilde, a large spring hole - well-hidden among houses in a small alley. Me imitating Neptune. Funny?

Follow the alley uphill for a bit, and we arrived at Uglebjergvej neighbourhood - there's dozens of charming little old straw-roofed cottages here. Too bad no one invited us in for tea.

Remember how we used to draw houses as a kid? Don't these cottages look like what we used to draw?

In the heart of Uglebjergvej is St Jorgensbjerg Church, Denmark's oldest stone church. From the back of the church, we could already see the fjord. We head there next.

Roskilde's fjord is home to the town's sailing club, the Viking Ship Museum and the waterfront workshops. It was too cold to be stay along the waterfront, so we head back into town through Roskilde park, stopping briefly to see Dom Kirke again.

We had lunch at Radhus Kaelderen near the town hall - recommended by travel guides. We ordered the lunch set which consisted of smorrebrod (what else!) with pickled herring, liver pate and prawn toppings.

The pickled herring and pate is way too exotic for my taste buds. Coffee was excellent though *grin*

We had a look at the shops after lunch - last minute shopping before heading back to Copenhagen. There's a stall at the town square selling roasted almonds. Very fragrant but extremely sweet.

It is very easy to get to Roskilde from Copenhagen. Trains are frequent and it takes about 25 minutes.

Our wonderful (a bit eventful) trip has come to an end. I shall return to Scandinavian Europe one day, hopefully in the summer/spring when there's longer daylight hours.

Lund, Sweden

Pronounced 'Loon', this university town somehow reminds me of Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. Its very close to Malmo - 15 minutes on the local train. So we decided to check it out!

Centred around a striking cathedral, Lund is a typical university town with leafy parks, cobbled walkways and small cafes. Apparently this Roman cathedral is well publicised, and the astronomical clock still strikes!

Surprisingly, there's a good number of cafes, restaurants and cheap eateries in town. Relatively good shopping too!

We left Lund after covering the town, hoping to see the Oresund Bridge when we cross over to Copenhagen. Unfortunately, it got dark when we were travelling on it.

Malmo, Sweden

Once dismissed as crime-prone and tatty, Sweden's third largest city, Malmo has rebranded itself as progressive and downright cool.

The city is now connected to Copenhagen by the Oresund bridge (which I wanted very much to see, but missed the chance), and also is home to Sweden's tallest building - the Turning Torso.

Although its Sweden's third largest city, Malmo isn't that big to me. But I can agree that its a cool city *wink* in terms of ideas - hence Malmo is actually known as 'City of Ideas'.

We spent a lot of time combing the shops in the city - shopping. The shops, especially those selling household goods and appliances are amazing. They have everything you can think of, and things you never knew existed.

There are many such cool shops in Davidshalls, along the Rorsjokanalen canal. Best, they are cheaper and more affordable. We ended up buying a few gadgets! Had to hold back a little otherwise our credit cards will blow.

I have to show you the hostel where we stayed a night. I call it the IKEA hostel, simply because everything is from IKEA. I loved it!

STF Vandrarhem Malmo is on the other side of the city, so its quite a way to the city centre. Opppsss, I forgot photos of the toilets!

We decided to make use of the facilities - so we made dinner and breakfast. There is a supermarket located conveniently downstairs.

The Malmo Konsthall is located two streets behind the hostel, so we checked it out in the morning. This is Europe's largest contemporary art spaces. Really??

We moved on to see the Malmohus Slott (castle) located on the other side of the city - it took us a while to walk there. There are various museums in and around the castle grounds. We could see the Turning Torso from here too.

Nothing exciting, we moved to the older part of the city - Lilla Torg. The cobbled streets and interesting buildings around Lilla Torg are restored parts of the late-medieval town.

The half-timbered houses are now occupied by galleries, boutiques and restaurants. The Form/Design Center is also here. Next to Lilla Torg is Stortorget town square. We spotted the cute Optimistic Orchestra here.

We had lunch at Cafe Vasper - a small family-run cafe. And after that more shopping in the city before going to Lund!

Helsingborg, Sweden

My scond Scandinavian Europe country for this trip, Sweden! We have stepped into Swedish soil. Yes, in a town called Helsingborg.

We first stroll along Norra Hamnen, the north harbour to get our orientation of the place. We saw two things beside the usual seaside monument.

First, an impressive castle-like building which turned out to be the tourist information centre, and second, an electric motorbike! I haven't seen one before - I mean the bike.

As we come into the centre of town, right in our face is Karnan - a gigantic structure which used to be the medieval castle.

It is just in your face this huge thing. What remained today are just ruins - can you imagine the real thing?? Oh man!

Karnan starts from Stortorget, the town square. From there, there's like a couple of dozens of stairs that lead you up to dramatic and oversized archways. There's also a couple of round watch towers on the way up.

Walk through a series of arches and the castle's solid tower will be right in your face again. It looked so solid and tall and fierce that I doubt anything could bring it down.

Once at the top, the view of Helsingborg town is at your feet, and it is stunning!!! We spent quite some time here, before going back into the town.

Shops are already well-prepared for Christmas. Streets are all decorated. We roam along smaller alleys for a while, before catching an evening train to Malmo, Sweden's third largest city.

Helsingor, Denmark

Helsingor is also known as Elsinore to the locals, so don't get confused like I did initially. From Hillerod, it took a mere 15-minute train ride to get to this charming harbour town.

Helsingor is well-known for two reasons. For tourists, it is the Kronborg Castle; and for the Swedish, it is to buy cheaper booze. We did a walking tour of this relatively small town to see what it has got to offer.

We started from the harbour, and walked towards Havnegade and Strandgade which made up parts of the medieval quarter. The Sankt Olai Kirke (old cathedral) and Sct Mariae Kirke (priory) are just around the corner.

A local recommended a good place for lunch along Strandgade called David's, so we made our way there. It was simple yet delicious, reasonably priced as well.

We ordered our usual Danish specialty, the smorrebrod or open sandwich with frikadeller (meatballs) and fish fillet toppings. By now, we have been eating smorrebrod everyday, just like the locals!

After a hearty meal, we begin our walk to Helsingor's top sight, Kronborg Castle, made famous as the Elsinore Castle of Shakespeare's Hamlet. As we enter the castle's compound, pre-recorded sounds of horses and firing canons greeted us. What a welcome!

The castle wasn't used as a royal residence, instead functioned as a grand tollhouse collecting taxes from ships passing through the Oresund. A bit too grand for a toll booth ay?? Well, it was built for that sole purpose!

The Oresund is a 4km narrow strait that separates Denmark and Sweden. To get over to the other side simply take the Scandlines ferries which sail every half hour between Helsingor and Helsingborg. It only takes 20 minutes to cross the straits on a big ferry which can even take motor vehicles.

We say goodbye Denmark, and hello Sweden. Our first sight of Helsingborg, Sweden!!!

Hillerod, Denmark

Done with Copenhagen, we travelled up north to the Zealand district visiting Hillerod and Helsingor before crossing over to Sweden, to cover Helsingborg, Malmo and Lund.

Visitors usually do a day trip from Copenhagen but we decided to stay a night in Malmo, so that we'll have ample time to explore all of these places. It turned out to be a good decision *wink*.

Hillerod is about 30km northwest of Copenhagen. It is easily reached by train, only a 45 minute ride. The main attraction is the Frederiksborg Castle, now home to the national museum.

It is quite a long walk to the castle from the train station, but we didn't mind. The town is quite nice by itself. We arrived pretty early in the morning, so it was still relatively quiet.

After a leisurely 15-minute walk, we arrived at the town square. Downhill, the Statue of King Frederik VI greeted us, and walla! we see the castle reflected onto the clear blue lake.

I couldn't resist feeding the hungry ducks. After that we walked to the castle to take some photos. Just before noon, it was time for us to leave Hillerod for Helsingor.

Walk 6: The Royal District and Slotsholmen
We got up in the morning and wondered when the rain will stop. No such luck. The sky is still grey and there's no sign of the sun coming out. Looks like winter has arrived!

What better breakfast to start a wet morning? Maggi Mee of course. We bought this the night before from a 7-Eleven down the road. Chicken and mushroom flavour. Yums!

After breakfast, we braced the rain and wind to get to Slotsholmen. An island separated from the city centre by a moat-like canal on three sides and the harbour on the other side, Slotsholmen is the site of Christiansborg Palace - home to Denmark's parliament.

We basically just snapped some photos and moved on. On the way out we realised the National Museum is right by the corner of the Palace. Again, snap and go. Along the way, we passed by the Stock Exchange Building. Same thing, snap and go.

Before heading towards the Royal District, we stopped at Illum department store for shelter as the rain was getting heavier, wind stronger. Christmas decor is already up.

Our final stop Amalienborg Palace - home of the royal family. Nothing spectacular. The complex comprises of four austere mansions surrounding the central square and guarded by sentries. We stood under the archway to take some shots, and we're out of here.

Walk 5: Christianshavn
The skies turned grey and then black on the day we planned to go to Christianshavn. Oh no!!! And it started to rain. Oh man, wet day ahead!!!

It did dampen our mood a little as we were looking forward to visiting this quarter. Oh well, we braced the rain and went ahead.

Due to the pouring rain that didn't seem to subside (sigh, it just got heavier), we decided to cut short the walk and head straight to Vor Frelsers Kirke - Christianshavn impressive landmark.

Before that, we needed some breakfast and also shelter from the rain and wind. We tried two popular bakeries - Lagkagehuset and Holm. Danish pastries anyone??? I had a small bite. Too sweet for me.

The Vor Frelsers Kirke has an impressive baroque altar and an elaborately carved pipe organ propped up by two unhappy looking decorative elephants.

The organist was rehearsing his pieces when we arrived, so we listened to him play while hoping the rain would stop. We lit some candles and make a small donation (.....and it still rained!).

Our prayers weren't answered. We left the warm church to continue our journey. P/S It rained throughout the night and the next day.

Walk 4: Norrebro and along the reservoirs
Another short walk, and a pretty 'plain' one. We didn't realise Norrebro is actually a residential area. We didn't know either that Copenhagen has reservoirs right in the middle of the city!

The Statue of Neptune stood guarding the reservoirs of Peblinge So Lake and Sortedams So Lake. There are a few of these statues along the banks - almost all of them vandalised by splash of red and white paints.

We crossed the Dronnings Louise Bro Bridge to get to the other side of the reservoirs. While walking the streets of Norrebro, we came upon the Helligkors Kirke in a quiet street.

As Norrebro is a residential area, there are quite a number of stalls and shops selling fresh produce. We managed to buy some very cheap, and yummy grapes along the way!

Walk 3: Rosenborg Castle and Gardens
This was a relatively short walk, and we did it when the sun was about to set at 4pm. The skies were beautifully illuminated with pink and purple at sunset - too bad my camera wasn't able to capture it.

Rosenborg Castle is a fairytale castle and is one of Copenhagen's great landmarks. Inside there's glorious marbled and painted ceilings, gilded mirrors, priceless Dutch tapestries, solid silver lions, and gold-and-enamel ware.

The Royal Treasury, in the castle basement, is home to the Danish crown jewels. I was wondering why the castle was heavily guarded.

We spent time roaming around Kongens Have, a large public park behind Rosenborg Castle. I fed my leftover breakfast and biscuits to hungry ducklings *grin*.

Walk 2: The Harbour Area
This was my favourite walk of all. We took the Metro to Kongens Nytorv and started the walk from the Royal Theatre heading towards Nyhavn.

We did a pit stop at the quite eerie-feeling Charlottenborg Palace, which is now used as a modern art exhibition space.

As we turn the corner, tada! pleasantly welcomed by the amazing view of the harbourfront. This is the site which is always featured in postcards and documentaries of Copenhagen - the picturesque Nyhavn. I am here!!!

The brightly coloured warehouses are now home to some excellent (and pricey!) restaurants in town. The one that stood out the most was Cap Horn. We simply have to sample the excellent Danish cuisines served here - a tad too expensive for the budget, but definitely worth it!

We ordered plaice, a type of Danish fish and liver pate with bacon and mushrooms. Not my kind of food, but hey we've got to try what's recommended, right?

After lunch we walked round the harbour a few times. Just for the fun of it! Can't seem to get enough of this place, we decided to come back another day, in the evening.

As if lunch wasn't enough, we tried fried langoustine - again a type of Danish fish. Actually it smelled and tasted like fried lard!

With a heavy heart, we say goodbye to Nyhavn.

Copenhagen, Denmark - Walking tour 1

My first trip to Scandinavian Europe - and I absolutely loved it! Hopefully I'll be able to return another day to see more of these beautiful countries. The Insight Guide recommended quite a number of walking tours in Copenhagen - so we did exactly that.

Walk 1: Old Inner City
Typical of old cities, Copenhagen's is full with squares and churches. We took our time to explore each and every one of them.

The squares in the Old City still maintained the cobbled walkways and colourful half-wooden houses. But I have to say their churches are quite dull in architecture.

The Latin Quarter is home to Copenhagen University. The streets surrounding this quarter are narrow, and the half-timbered town houses is filled with shops, cafes and restaurants.

I spotted a street vendor selling all kinds of dried fruits and nuts outside of the Church of the Holy Ghost.

We walked towards Amagertorv Square to have a peep at the many designer boutiques and the famous Royal Copenhagen store. There were also street vendors selling fresh flowers. Aren't they beautiful?

Did a short detour to have a look at the St Nicholas Church hidden behind the square before going to the Gammel Strand (Old Beach).

This is a good place to take a break after walking for approximately half a day. We sat along the river to admire the pretty view and people-watch before continuing our tour. The statue of fish wife is often referred to by the locals as 'old mermaid'.

We head to Pistolstraede, another lovely square filed with restaurants and shops. Not to mention, rows of colourful half-timbered houses too. We can't seem to get enough of these multi-coloured houses!

We completed our Old Inner City tour at the Round Tower. At 209m high, it certainly looked very dominating in the middle of the old city. The tower houses the oldest functioning observatory in Europe!

We had clear blue skies and ample sunshine during the walk. Not too bad for a November winter in Denmark aye!

Zaanse Schans, The Netherlands

Psst! It slipped my mind that we went to Zaanse Schans to see the windmills, until I saw their leaflet lying on my table. How could I forget *duh*! Oh well, we spent a day out in this windmill village just outside of Amsterdam.

It is relatively easy to get there. A 45-minute bus ride from Amsterdam Central Station will take you until the doorstep. Costed only Euro5 for a return journey.

Zaanse Schans is an open museum well known for its windmills and cottage industries (cheese, potteries, waffles, wooden clogs). If you want to see all of these in one location, Zaanse Schans is a good place to spend a day. Best, most things are free. You just need to pay an entrance fee if you want to go inside the windmills.

Welcome to Zaanse Schans! And our cameras went snap, snap, snap! These are just some of the photos I took of the windmills. There are still a number of working windmills here which are used to press oil, saw wood, grind dyes and make paper.

Some windmills are open during the winter season and the millers are more than happen to explain how things work if you ask.

Apart from the windmills, we took our time to visit the rest of the museums and traditional crafts workshops. The two main ones are the wooden clogs workshop and the cheese farm.

Others included the blue pottery museum, and shops selling Dutch products.

At the far end of the area, there are very well-preserved wooden houses and old industrial buildings. Plenty of photo opportunities here!
